Candidates at Mernda

At a forum in Mernda, hear from state election candidates about their parties’ policies, transport issues and promises before November’s poll. Waterway wonders

Friends of Upper Moonee Ponds Creek will get together for a planting day this Sunday, 12.30-3pm at The Tarnuk, end of Wright Street, Westmeadows (Melway 5 G6). This will be the final community planting day of the year. It will add to the precious patch of native grassland at The Tarnuk. Volunteers will plant wildflowers to increase the diversity of bird species in the area and will be rewarded with a Devonshire tea of jam and home-made scones.

Navaratri festival

The Northern Gujarati Association of Melbourne will host its Navaratri festival, featuring traditional Garba dance, Dandiya Rass and pooja prayer, from 6-11.30pm on Saturday at RMIT University Bundoora Netball and Sports Centre, McKimmies Road, Bundoora. Tickets are $12 and include a pre-packed dinner. Book today.

Sing out

Sing for the sake of singing with the Mernda Community Singers group. Meet from 7-9pm every Thursday during school

Planters needed

On Saturday, October 11, from 10am-noon, the garden beds lining O’Shanassy Street shops will be turned over and planted with edible summer plants. But volunteers are needed to complete the task. Meet outside Vic’s at No.93 to learn the basics of drought-proofing a garden and choosing hardier plants for this time of year.

Doing the law justice

Celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Whittlesea courthouse through a series of events and activities. They’ll be held from 9am-5pm, September 27, to October 19, at the Whittlesea courthouse visitor information centre, corner of Church and Beech streets.
