Old age should not necessitate a set of false teeth, according to research conducted by the University of Melbourne with Whittlesea residents.
Researchers in the Oral Health CRC at the University of Melbourne found a new online program can help the elderly retain their natural teeth, and save thousands of dollars in the process. The online oral health program was trialed on about 40 City of Whittlesea residents over the age of 55 last year.
For about 12 weeks the participants completed 10 online interactive tutorials at home or at Mill Park library about the causes of gum disease, what to eat for good oral health and how to clean your natural teeth and dentures.
Project leader Associate Professor Rodrigo Mariňo said the people who took part in the trial embraced the new technology and made positive changes to their dental care routines.
“The learning materials were developed by oral health experts after extensive consultation with older adults,” says Associate Professor Mariňo. “So they specifically address oral health issues for older people in a way that people can understand and act upon.”
Trial facilitator Nella Palmieri said participants saw good oral health as a potential saving. “They were keen to look after their teeth to avoid dentures, which is a big saving.”
