Six- and 16-year-olds bridged the age gap last Tuesday as part of Kids Teaching Kids Week.
Year 10 students of Whittlesea Secondary College headed over to Laurimar Primary School to teach 180 grade 1 pupils all about science.
The secondary students organised 10 activities covering topics such as force, dry ice and gravity.
Laurimar physical education co-odinator Rhett McDonald said the experience opened pupils’ eyes to the possibilities of science.
“The students absolutely loved it,” he said.
Science isn’t introduced into the curriculum until grade 3 in Victoria, but the Laurimar youngsters got an insight into what to expect.
“They loved seeing all the different sorts of experiments and making slime,” Mr McDonald said.
Whittlesea Secondary College science curriculum manager Jacinta Greer said Kids Teaching Kids encouraged her students to become self-directed and independent learners.
