A science forum will pave the way for Madison Essery’s philanthropic trip to a developing country.
The year 11 student from Doreen was selected to attend the National Science Youth Forum in Canberra, early next year.
The forum exposes year 11 students interested in a science career to major scientific institutions and researchers. They’re also trained in time management, interview skills and public speaking.
Madison wants to study medicine and head over to a third-world country to volunteer at medical clinics.
“I want to go to a developing country because I know I’ve been given opportunities and I get to have a proper education and proper health care,” Madison said.
“But there are kids out there dying from preventable diseases.”
The Whittlesea Secondary College student hopes to raise another $2000 to cover the expenses of her trip, which have been partly funded by Whittlesea Rotary.
Madison will get the chance to apply to universities around the country and network with peers and experts in the field.
“I’m looking forward to being in a place with a lot of other kids who have the same passion and want to go on with science,” she said.
She is hoping to raise money at a science night presented at Whittlesea Secondary, Laurel Street, Whittlesea from 7pm on Thursday, November 6. Tickets are $15. Call 9719 1200.
