Epping centre helps Aboriginals in the jobs market

With a well-established Koori community, Epping was an obvious choice for a special vocational education and training centre aimed at “closing the gap” of Aboriginal disadvantage in the jobs market.

“It’s good to be located in some of the communities that will benefit from this program,” said Tracee Vassallo, who last week took up her role as manager of the new MEGT Vocational Training and Employment Centre in Coulstock Street, which has a diverse swag of 250 vacancies to be filled.

“We’ve already started to put together the vacancy lists and position descriptions for indigenous Australians in some of the largest organisations in Melbourne.” These include White Lion and the Indigenous Workstars, WISE and Matchworks, as well as Aboriginal co-operatives and health services.

“The next stage is to connect with indigenous Australians across Victoria and invite them to apply for these vacancies,” Ms Vassallo said.

“We want to encourage anyone interested to get in touch.

“We can refer local kids to training in everything from hospitality to warehousing; there are positions as posties and in parks and gardens … there’s a range of jobs.”
