Meghana, a student at Whittlesea’s Umendra School of Indian Classical Dance, adds a spalsh of colour to the launch of Mernda’s festival of lights.
Melbourne’s first Diwali, India’s annual cultural celebration of light and all its prismatic glory, is the brainchild of the Mernda and Doreen Multicultural Association.
Group president Tom Joseph promises a smorgasbord of regional cuisines and entertainment.
Umendra Dance founder, Uma Rushyenthiran, will choreograph classical and creative dances from India and Sri Lanka, while Melbourne’s best ‘bhangra’ (punjabi folk dance) team will also perform.
The festival lights up on October 25 at Buttercross Park. Estate developer Stockland is principal sponsor. Costa Exchange, Bendigo Bank, McDonald’s, Stockdale & Leggo South Morang and Bridge Inn Hotel are all on board as well.
