Sunbury off-leash park: Dogs to have their day

Sunbury dog owners look forward to the time when pooches can roam freely without leashes.

Forty submissions were received on Hume council’s draft concept plans for Sunbury Park, a proposed fenced area for dogs to run free.

The park, on the corner of Harker and Jackson streets, will include education and agility equipment, rock areas with sensory vegetation and fully fenced areas.

Dog obedience trainer Barbara Lloyd said a dog park would be well utilised.

“With so many people having dogs now, it’s hard to find a safe place to let them run around and interact with other dogs. That’s why dog parks are such a good idea.”

There were almost 18,000 registered dogs in Hume last financial year, but the council’s draft animal management plan estimates the total number of dogs owned could be as high as 29,000.

There are nine registered dogs that are declared dangerous and 40 restricted breeds.

Hume mayor Casey Nunn said fenced dog parks were a relatively new concept.

She said the council would establish two fenced parks, in Craigieburn and Sunbury, to allow owners to exercise their dogs in a “safe and enriching environment”.
