Campbellfield Heights Primary School has many refugee families in its community, including some who arrived here by boat.
So in developing its “acts of kindness” social-awareness program, an obvious choice of partners was the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC), the largest provider of aid, advocacy and health services for asylum seekers coming to Australia.
Pupils spent their last week of term boxing up food parcels for people being held in detention centres in Melbourne and other places.
Principal Jo Howard said the school community had been inspired by one of the teachers to take action during last year’s Refugee Week, and this year they decided to continue their efforts.
“We have a mainly Muslim school community so when we thought ‘what can we do?’, we thought of the celebration of
Eid, which is a time for charity,” Ms Howard said.
By the end of term last Friday, pupils had filled up 10 cartons with long-life milk, breakfast cereal, pasta, soups and toilet paper for distribution by the ASRC.
“I’m sure it’ll happen next year as well,” Ms Howard said.
