Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated by Indian communities all over the world as a thanksgiving for autumn harvests. And while it’s spring Down Under in October, that’s no reason not to share the good times.
Mernda and Doreen Multicultural Association reflects the growing population from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka settling in Melbourne’s north.
Group founder Tom Joseph says skilled migrants from South Asia who have settled locally want to share their culture with the wider community. “While South Asians are not a culturally and linguistically homogenous group, there is one celebration that is pan-Indian and, to a large extent, celebrated in many other parts, and that is Diwali.”
With support from Whittlesea council and the Doreen-Mernda branch of the Bendigo Bank, the group is planning a lighting spectacular at Buttercross Park on October 25. The day-long event will showcase Indian culture, with traditional dancing, music, a community market and stalls. There will also be traditional drumming, Bollywood dancing workshops and Indian wrestling.
