Fire has caused big damage to a wedding reception centre in Green Street, Thomastown, early on Friday morning.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade was called to the scene just after 1am.
Acting Commander Geoff Hughes said the single-storey brick-veneer building was well alight from front to back upon their arrival.
“Flames were three-to-four metres outside the structure.”
Twentythree firefighters used four pumpers to bring the blaze under control in less than 20 minutes.
The wedding reception venue, Greenville Receptions, at 13-15 Green Street, had extensive damage to all areas including the roof. Neighbouring properties were unharmed.
A Whittlesea council engineer was at the site on Friday morning, making an assessment of the building.
It’s estimated the repair bill could exceed $1 million.
“I believe parts will need to be demolished. There’s fair damage to about 80 per cent of the structure,” Mr Hughes said.
Police were also at the site, trying to find out the cause of the blaze, which is yet to be determined.
