Sunbury couple recognised by Hume council for volunteer work

A husband and wife have been recognised for their commitment to the community.

Noel and Coral Hann were recently dubbed ‘residents of the month’ by Hume council in recognition of their volunteer work and dedication to the community.

The pair help in many successful Sunbury programs, including the Sunbury Family Community Kitchen, the Salvation Army op-shop and the Companion Club, which they have been running for six years.

It was almost a decade ago that the couple embarked on their volunteer journey together, after Mr Hann was retrenched.

“We had led busy lives and to take it all away, suddenly you have nothing to do,” Mr Hann said.

“Volunteering is a good way to keep active and to help people.”

“We like helping people, and helping those less fortunate than us,” Mrs Hann said.

The Companion Club, a social group for residents 50 and older, is designed to encourage the community to come together.

Mr and Mrs Hann also provide a community transport service to give support to isolated and disadvantaged people living in Sunbury and to ensure all community members have access to the programs.

“We get enjoyment from seeing people come together, talking and interacting,” Mr Hann said.

The couple say they hope to continue volunteering for as long as they’re healthy.

The Hanns’ residents of the month status is part of a council initiative to thank citizens who contribute to the community.

The Companion Club meets weekly. For more information, call 9740 4589.
