Landcare Australia has launched Perfect Pitch of Green, a grants program for schools and youth groups wanting to green up their sports field. Junior Landcare has introduced a new in-kind grants program for freshly grown grass. Ten schools will be chosen to receive natural turf covering an area of up to 200 square metres Applications close July 1.

GRAFFITI HAS ITS DAY

Love graffiti? Got talent? Entries are now open for Hume council’s Write Signal competition. The council is looking for 20 young people aged 14-25 to join a project that will transform the otherwise grey traffic signal boxes on poles around the municipality. There will also be an exhibition of short-listed works at youth centres. Entries are due by June 27, with the exhibition to be held in July.

DISCO DANCING

A disco dance for people with all abilities will be held in Broadmeadows on June 27. A hip-hop DJ will keep people dancing through the night. The alcohol- and smoke-free event for people over 18 is from 7.30-10.30pm at the Broadmeadows Leisure Centre. Entry is $12 and $5 for carers.

AGENING WELL

The Council of the Ageing (COTA) is offering a free information session tomorrow for residents over 55 on identifying, preventing and responding to depression. The session will be led by COTA’s John Doutch, who will share strategies for staying on top. It will be webcast live from Whittlesea council’s civic centre to Mill Park library as part of the development of Whittlesea seniors’ virtual village. Sessions are from 12.30-2.30pm at both venues.

PLANT THE FUTURE

Whittlesea’s bushland management team is calling for all hands on deck at Quarry Hills Park on Sunday at 10am to help plant 5000 trees and shrubs. The project aims to reinstate preferred habitat for woodland bird species that have been making increasing appearances in local reserves. Bring sturdy shoes, a hat and a rain coat

if wet – all tools and gloves supplied, along with light refreshments. The park is at 105 Hunters Lane, South Morang (Melway 183 D1).
