A two-year-old child has been found in the back of a car in Tullamarine that was heading to an illegal drag race.
The 22-year-old driver of the Holden sedan revved the car’s engine several times as he shot past a police car in Tullamarine on Wednesday night, police say.
When an officer pulled the car over at 9.45pm, the driver stated he was on his way to watch a drag race in the area.
Police say a 23-year-old woman was sitting in the back seat without wearing a seat belt, beside the toddler who was properly restrained.
Senior Constable Dan Carbonneau said he was shocked by the incident.
“Illegal drag or street racing is an incredibly dangerous and risky activity,” he said.
“I am at a loss as to why anyone would attend and put their own life at risk, let alone that of a child.”
Police have been targeting drag racing, occurring in the Tullamarine industrial estates, with regular patrols of known hot spots.
The driver, from Brookfield, and the woman, from Melton, were fined for seat belt offences.
