Police hunt for would-be Campbellfield abductor

Police are hunting for a man who attempted to abduct a woman while she waited for a bus in Campbellfield.

The Broadmeadows woman, 29, was at a bus stop on Mahoneys Road, Campbellfield, about 10pm on Thursday, February 20, when a late 80s or early 90s white-coloured Toyota Camry drove up to the kerb.

A man, calling himself John, struck up a conversation with the woman, asked her where she was going and offered her a lift.

After the woman declined his offer, the man got out of his car, opening the front passenger door and approached her.

The man demanded that she get into the car, taking hold of her in an attempt to drag her through the open door.

She struggled with the man and he let her go. He then got back into his car and drove off.

Transit crime investigation unit detectives have appealed for witnesses.

The man is described as in his mid 30s, scruffy in appearance, unshaven with grey hair, solid build, tall with dirty hands and fingernails.

The victim told police that the man smelt of cleaning products such as detergent or degreaser. She said he spoke with a strong accent, possibly Lebanese or Arabic.

Police have released a computer-generated image of a man they wish to speak about the incident, as well as a picture of a Toyota similar to the one driven by the man.

Anyone with information is asked to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
