Premier Cricket: Roos fall well short of Tigers chase

There was no repeat of the Kangaroos’ 2013 heroics against the Tigers in Victorian Premier Cricket on Saturday.

Greenvale – North Melbourne before a merger in the off-season – chased down 360 against Richmond – now Monash Tigers – last season.

But Greenvale was dismissed on Saturday for 140 chasing Monash’s 6/314, even though the Roos made a positive start, with openers Eric Ghasperidis (35) and Jake Martin (21) putting on 54.

Both lost their wickets within minutes of each other, triggering a disastrous collapse of 7/14 and the score slumped from 0/54 to 7/68.

Youngster James Damjanovski launched a rearguard action with 30 not out to help push the score into triple figures, but it simply delayed the inevitable.

Monash, needing an outright victory to hold onto very slim finals hopes, sent Greenvale in again and reduced the Kangaroos to 4/43 early before Daniel Salpietro (51 not out) and Matt Twentyman (25) played out the remaining overs.

Greenvale hosts Casey-South Melbourne in the final round this Saturday. An outright victory could mean the Kangaroos leapfrog the Swans into 15th.
