Epping Costco store bid goes to Whittlesea council

Whittlesea council will decide at its final meeting of the year tonight on a proposal by bulk shopping mecca Costco for a freestanding outlet in Epping.

The application, for a site at 20 Jovic Road, is for a single-storey Costco outlet, petrol station, tyre outlet, bottle shop, hearing centre, optometrist’s, car parking and landscaping.

If the application is successful, it will be Victoria’s third Costco outlet after Docklands and Ringwood.

The proposed store would be behind Northern Hospital and Epping Plaza, and would include new roads to improve access.

There will also be a new road extension to allow traffic to flow between the proposed Costco development, Epping Plaza and Northern Hospital.

If Costco gets the green light, the Epping outlet will open late next year, employ about 300 staff and sell more than 3600 products.

The new store would be in line with the American retail giant’s push for Australia-wide expansion, with five new stores expected to open across the country by 2015.

The Weekly contacted Costco for comment but did not get a response before deadline.
