Calling all nature lovers along Merri Creek

This Sunday’s end of spring weed blitz at Bababi Marning, aka the Cooper Street grasslands at Campbellfield, will signal season’s end for community clean-up efforts organised by Friends of Merri Creek.

Secretary Ray Radford is prepared for the project.

But now’s the time for nature lovers to sign up to help out with two important plant and widlife surveys.

People are being asked to help the Friends group learn more about the endangered Golden Sun Moth and how this special insect is coping with the urbanisation of its habitat by registering for survey expeditions across the grasslands over the next month.

The other survey underway will monitor the lifecycle of the Plains Yam Daisy, a mainstay Aboriginal food plant.

This survey will take place near Craigieburn on Sunday, December 8, and participants will learn how this rare and culturally important plant responds to the seasons.

Both surveys are funded by the state government’s communities for nature program and supported by the Victorian National Parks Association NatureWatch program.
