The opening of the final link-up of Aitken Boulevard at Craigieburn is already providing relief to drivers trying to negotiate clogged streets between the old town and new.
Outgoing Hume mayor Geoff Porter opened the latest leg of the $80 million project last week to create a continuous eight-kilometre stretch from Craigieburn Road to Mt Ridley Road in Mickleham.
The final stage, a 3.5-kilometre section from Grevillea Street to Craigieburn Road, gives motorists access up to Mt Ridley Road and incorporates walking and cycling paths.
“This is one of the most significant projects in Hume’s history,” Cr Porter said. “The road will provide easy access to schools, sports reserves and parks, and maternal and child health centres.
“As a key growth corridor, Craigieburn will be home to an additional 35,000 new residents in the next 20 years.
“To meet that growth, council is striking a balance to provide the services, facilities and infrastructure our community needs today, while we plan for the long term.”
