Lalor learner driver three times over limit after crashing, police say

A 59-year-old learner permit driver allegedly crashed while driving at three times the legal blood alcohol limit on Friday night, police say.

Epping Highway Patrol were called to a collision on the Metropolitan Ring Road at Thomastown about 6.45pm on Friday night where they found two cars had collided, one hitting a barrier.

Police allege a Lalor man was driving unaccompanied on a learner’s permit and provided a positive breath test, later providing an evidentiary sample of 0.147 per cent.

The man is expected to be charged on summons with traffic offences including drink driving, unaccompanied learner driver, breaching permit provisions and breach interlock condition.

Speeding cars in school zones in the Geelong area were targeted on Friday, with one driver allegedly driving at 75 km/h in a 40 km/h zone. The man, 39, was given a $469 fine and will lose his licence for one month.

Geelong Highway Patrol detected eight drivers speeding through the Corio and Hamlyn Heights school zones.

Later at 9pm the same officers clocked a car travelling at 133km/h in a 80km/h zone on Heales Road, Lara.

The Corio driver, 20, has his car impounded for 30 days, incurring impound and towing costs of $1038. He will also be charged on summons with traffic offences.

Victoria Police are targeting speeding drivers through October, saying it is traditionally a dangerous period on our roads.
