Whittlesea council says Melbourne Airport’s proposed expansion
will not affect local traffic conditions, despite calls from Hume
council for better transport infrastructure to support the growth.
The council has passed a motion to support the adoption of the
2013 Melbourne Airport Master Plan, which indicates how the airport will
expand to accommodate an expected rise in passenger numbers from 29.1
million last year to 64.37 million by 2033.
Whittlesea established areas planning assistant manager Darren
Jackson said the proposed third runway was not expected to result in any
additional impacts on Whittlesea residents.
When the airport master plan was discussed at a Hume council
meeting on August 12, a council report said the plan should identify
projects necessary to grow the external transport network.
The report included a recommendation to gain commitment from state government to improve road transport connections.
