Fair go for job seekers

Hume council is trying to match local people to local jobs with the Craigieburn Jobs Fair, which opens at Craigieburn Global Learning Centre on Central Park Drive today (August 28).

The idea is to bring job seekers face-to-face with potential employers.

“It gives employers better access to the labour market and local
people the best chance of getting local jobs,” according to Hume
economic development manager George Osborne.

Building on the success of JobLink 3064, a partnership between the
council and Highlands developer Stockland, Mr Osborne said the jobs
fair would feature recruitment specialists from town centre developer
Lend Lease, along with local trainers Kangan Institute and Meadow
Heights Learning Shop.

The fair, funded by the Department of Education, Employment and
Workplace Relations, is designed to renew the north’s traditional
manufacturing enterprises.

Last Tuesday, the council hosted a Get the Australian
Advantage session to let businesses know the support available to market
Australian-made andAustralian-grown goods and services. Among those who attended was Marshall Dwyer of the Plenty Food Group, which co-ordinates food manufacturers.

About 30 local businesses have joined the north’s Made in
Australia campaign, which accredits and registers companies under the
familiar green and gold logo featuring a kangaroo inside a green
triangle.

» The jobs fair is a free event and runs from noon-8pm today.
