Campbellfield factory fire suspicious, MFB says

A FIRE at a Campbellfield battery factory overnight is being treated as suspicious.

Fire crews worked into the early hours of Wednesday morning after an alert was raised at Battery World on Sydney Road at 8.30pm Tuesday.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade fire service controller Heather Stockton said authorities had declared the fire suspicious.

The fire involved 20 pallets of lead-acid car batteries, which were stacked at the rear of the premises.

“Some of the batteries exploded as crews used foam to extinguish the fire,” Ms Stockton said.

“It’s been deemed of a suspicious nature.”

The Environmental Protection Authority was notified of “minimal” water run-off from the fire that reached a nearby drainage system, she said.

The fire was never considered out of control, Ms Stockton said, however, five fire crews were on site for more than six hours tending to it.
