My Shout: From the editor

AS a journalist and political nerd, I should be excited about this federal election. But it’s difficult when the two major parties seem to be serving up the same homogenised content in different coloured packets.

Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbott are meant to be deeply opposed yet they’re doing their best to mimic each other. What appear to be points of difference are simply alternative ways to give with one hand and take with the other. What we need is a contest of ideas; instead we get Rudd and Abbott squaring up in the squalid middle ground in the fight for our hearts while treating our minds with contempt.

There was a time when you voted for a major party because it appealed to your ideals. On September 7, many people will simply be voting for the one they dislike the least.

What do you think?
