The Growling Frog Golf Course has been named Melbourne’s best public course by a leading industry magazine.
The Hacker Golf magazine hailed the Yan Yean course for its large greens, blend of reachable and unreachable holes, and mix of doglegs and elevation changes.
Magazine writer Bill Willetts said the stand-out course won its first place by a “substantial margin”, followed by Yarrambat Park in second place.
He said Growling Frog was already listed as one of Australia’s top public access courses.
Whittlesea mayor Rex Griffin said, “It’s a privilege to have such a high quality facility in Melbourne’s north.
“The Growling Frog was designed by golfing legend Graham Marsh and built by council in 2004 in an effort to provide the community with a multi-purpose recreation facility in the municipality’s north.”
The facility includes an 18-hole, par 72 course, restaurant, shop, driving range, putting green, and practice bunker.
City of Whittlesea residents and ratepayers who present identification can play an 18-hole game at the Growling Frog, 1910 Donnybrook Road, for $27 at specific times.
