NAIDOC Week: Get to know your own back yard

Wurundjeri elder Ian Hunter is hoping he can teach people to recognise useful native plants at an indigenous gardening workshop this week.

Mr Hunter is running the free workshop at the Whittlesea Community Garden on July 14 to celebrate National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week.

Mr Hunter will work with the City of Whittlesea to educate people about indigenous history and culture, as well as local indigenous plants.

Mr Hunter says although many plants can be toxic, he will teach people what can be used for medicines, tools, adhesives or food.

“I think people don’t know what’s in their own back yard,” he says.

The workshop is part of council’s Sustainability Outreach Whittlesea program.
