Elderly Italians in north-east targeted by con artist

A CON artist is targeting elderly Italian residents in Melbourne’s north-east.

Police believe the man attends the home address of potential victims and poses as an old friend of the family.

Speaking in fluent Italian, the man strikes up a conversation with the resident and names their family members in order to gain their trust.

He then asks the victim for a donation of cash or offers to sell or leave them a gift of a handbag or watch in exchange for money.

He also often mentions a wife or family member in a wheelchair who needs assistance.

Darebin Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the series of stings which have occurred in Reservoir, Thornbury, Bulleen and Doncaster.

Police believe a large syndicate may be targeting victims and are examining reports of similar incidents in South Australia.

With several reports made since May 8, police believe there could be a number of victims who have not yet reported matters to police and are urging them to come forward.

Anyone with information or who believes they are a victim of similar incidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
