Elder Abuse: Northern Health shines spotlight on treatment of seniors

Health social workers will work with people experiencing or witnessing the abuse of the elderly.

Northern Health chief executive Janet Compton said Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 highlighted the need to protect older people who suffered neglect or mistreatment.

“Elder abuse may occur in many forms, including psychological, emotional, financial and sexual abuse, social isolation and neglect or withholding of medical care,” Ms Compton said.

“Our elders have the right to be treated with respect and dignity.

“Members of our community need to be made aware that if they are a victim of elder abuse, there are appropriate services they can access.”

In the lead-up to the awareness day, social workers will host displays at the Northern Hospital, Broadmeadows Health Service and Bundoora extended care centre on Friday, June 14 from noon to 2pm.
