A 32-bed general ward is to be built at the Northern Hospital with a $29 million funds boost announced today.
Premier Denis Napthine and Health Minister David Davis announced the 2013-14 budget funding today at the Epping site of the hospital.
Initial plans show a three-storey general wing, which can have another three storeys added in future, Mr Davis said.
Mr Napthine said it was “absolutely essential” to meet the needs of the growing northern region, estimated to balloon by 55 per cent in 13 years.
He said the Northern’s emergency department was the busiest in Victoria, and demand was growing.
Construction is due to start next year and be completed by 2016.
The hospital is undergoing construction of a $24.5 million emergency department upgrade.
