No Maccas for Doreen or Mernda as outcry offers food for thought

FAST food giant McDonald’s has quashed speculation it will build a store in Doreen or Mernda.

Residents on social media were abuzz with the news that a store would open in the fast-growing area that attracts families with young children.

But not all were happy with the idea, with one resident suggesting a petition should be started to stop the development.

McDonald’s spokeswoman Skye Oxenham said there were no “immediate” plans for a restaurant in Mernda or Doreen.

She said a McDonald’s store being built on the corner of Epping and Harvest Home roads in Wollert would open this year.

Whittlesea council confirmed there were no planning applications for any more McDonald’s stores in the municipality.

Talk on social media about the merits of another fast food outlet sparked debate, instead, on the need for a pub in the area.

One resident suggested a family friendly hotel, with a children’s play area and dining room.

Another wanted a “funky bar or two” instead of fast food outlets.
