TAKE a stroll down memory lane with a new walking tour of the 1800s German settlement at Westgarthtown, Thomastown.
Friends of Westgarthtown has created a 2.5-kilometre trail starting at the Whittlesea council-owned Ziebell’s Farmhouse, past four privately owned original farmhouses, the Lutheran Church and Lutheran Cemetery.
Group spokeswoman Gillian Borrack (pictured) says the buildings of Westgarthtown are of national significance and reveal the “hidden” story of German settlement in the area from 1850.
William Westgarth, a Melbourne merchant, bought 240 hectares of land in Thomastown in 1850 for 16 German families who recreated a German village and dairy farms.
The walking tour and an accompanying brochure will be launched on Sunday, April 28, at Ziebell’s Farmhouse in German Lane, Thomastown, between 1pm and 4pm.
