Cops out in force across Darebin, Whittlesea over Easter break

More than 4000 drivers were breath tested on Darebin and Whittlesea roads over the Easter period, with seven registering above the prescribed legal limit.

Statistics for Whittlesea and Darebin Police Service Areas indicate drivers racked up a number of fines, with 36 in Whittlesea found driving an unregistered car and more than 10 driving without a licence.

Twelve motorists were reported for mobile phone offences and a further 11 for driving without a seatbelt.

The infringements were detected as part of Operation Crossroads, which was rolled out across the Easter break. A total of 326 drink driving offences were detected throughout Victoria as part of the operation.

Assistant Commissioner of Road Policing Robert Hill said: “The large majority of road users do the right thing, but it’s the minority who continue to let us down and cause heartbreak in our community.”

“Safe road user behaviour and journey planning doesn’t rest solely with drivers and riders – all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, have a responsibility to think about how they’re going to travel safely on the road network,” Mr Hill said.

The nation-wide operation targeted excessive speed and drink and drug driving in a bid to reduce road trauma over the Easter period.

The operation began on 28 March and concluded at midnight 1 April.
