A MAN was shot dead in an alleged bungled burglary in Thomastown last night.
Police have appealed for two men who were with the man to come forward.
Detective Inspector John Potter told 3AW the owner of a factory in Bostock Court had told police the two men fled when the fatal shot was fired at about 2.35am.
He said the factory owner rang 000 and told police he had shot a man with a rifle during the alleged attempted burglary.
The identity of the dead man, in his 20s, was unknown and he was not carrying any identification, Detective Inspector Potter told 3AW.
“We’re quite desperate to confirm his identity,” he said.
“We don’t know who they (the two other men) are and we’re obviously keen to speak to those people.
“The circumstances of the burglary may or may not be relevant, our primary need is to find out who this dead man is.”
The factory owner, 37, who had worked late and was sleeping at the factory overnight, was helping police with their inquiries, he said.
Anyone with information is asked to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
