THE fire that torched parts of Epping was “uncontrollable” as soon as it started and City of Whittlesea residents were still at risk, according to the CFA regional commander John Deering.
“In those conditions it was uncontrollable immediately, even though the CFA appliances [vehicles] were there in six minutes,” Mr Deering said.
The grass fire, which started on Donnybrook Road, Donnybrook travelled about five to six kilometres an hour, reaching Craigieburn East Road in 80 minutes, he said.
Residents living anywhere the estate adjoined grasslands and forests were still at risk after the recent heatwave, he said.
Epping CFA captain, Heath Kenzie, said firefighters had organised three more “Fire Ready” safety meetings for residents as the hot weather was predicted to continue.
Mr Kenzie said the meetings would help residents avoid “last minute panic” and allow them to discuss how to prepare for a fire.
He said families could share their experiences or learn from others at the community meetings.
“You have to prepare yourself for all the dos and dont’s on total fire ban days and hot days,” he said.
