THE Laurimar Power Football Club launches its third season this month with a promise to field a senior team in about four years.
The club formed in 2010 and played its first game in the Northern Football League’s junior competition in 2011, but president Alasdair Walker said the club was working with the league to develop a seniors side.
“The under-13 players are our oldest and we will be developing a pathway for them to play in senior football in about four to five years’ time,” Walker said.
“The league approached us because we are the expanding club in the area and we will be developing our players with its help.”
He said the club had grown from two junior teams in 2011 to seven junior teams for 2013, ranging from under-nines to under-13s, and there was a “super rules” side for fathers over 35.
“In the juniors we have 160 kids and welcome new players. There are 150 kids in the Auskick, which starts in April, but ideally people should sign up now.”
Walker said the hard ground at Laurimar Oval had created a safety issue, but recent rain had softened the ground and filled nearby wetlands used to water the oval.
Whittlesea council’s manager of parks and open space, Bruce Schroder, said the wetlands had suffered low water levels until recently.
“Laurimar Oval’s irrigation system draws water from nearby wetlands, with a back-up water supply pumped from a dam,” he said. “The wetlands water levels have been low and the dam pump has been out of action, but both these water supplies have returned and regular irrigation resumed.”
The club will launch its season on Sunday, March 17, at 10.30am at the Laurimar Oval in Painted Hills Road, Doreen. Several family activities have been planned.
