ONE in five shops in Whittlesea’s main street are vacant, creating a “graveyard”, according to a trader.
Trish Wileman said about 10 of the street’s 50 or so shops were empty and were the catalyst for the formation of the Whittlesea Business Group.
She said the group, which was seeking members, would promote local shopping to keep Whittlesea’s retail heart beating.
The group planned to ask real estate agents and owners of vacant shops if local artists could display their art in the shops.
“That way it’s not like a graveyard with empty shops with mail piled under the doors and cobwebs across the front,” Ms Wileman said.
She said the group also wanted to ensure the Whittlesea council’s streetscape improvements later this year would enhance a welcoming atmosphere and include things such as a water fountain for dogs and public toilets.
Ms Wileman said the group would lobby the state government for a 24-hour police station in Whittlesea. The closest station now is in Mill Park.
“Night patrols of police would reduce crime but for that we need a 24-hour police station.”
■ The Whittlesea Business Group will meet on Tuesday, March 26 at the Whittlesea Bowls Club, Church Street at 6.30pm.
