Three hurt as La Trobe uni concert erupts into violence

POLICE are investigating a brawl at La Trobe University in Bundoora last night where two men were taken to hospital, one with serious head injuries.

A fight broke out between security guards and about 20 patrons at Union Hall about 10.30pm police said.

Three people were injured, including a 20-year-old Strathewen man who suffered serious head injuries, and a Hurstbridge man, 22,  who also suffered head injuries, both of whom were taken to the Austin Hospital, while  a 21-year-old Eltham woman suffered minor head injuries, police said.

A university spokeswoman said no La Trobe students were injured in the incident, which occured during  an orientation concert at Union Hall organised by the La Trobe’s student union.

“It is believed to have involved a group of youths and crowd controllers,” she said. “The crowd controllers were contracted by the licensee (of the premises) and were not members of La Trobe University security staff. The matter is being investigated by police so there is nothing further we can say at this stage.”

Detectives from Darebin Crime Investigation Unit have appealed for witnesses.
