New La Trobe centre a quantum leap in bio-tech research

LA TROBE University has opened the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science, a world class research centre into molecular science, biotechnology and nanotechnology.

The centre will train the next generation of scientists and is a key in developing a bioscience precinct in the northern suburbs, according to La Trobe University vice-chancellor Professor John Dewar.

“La Trobe is one of Australia’s top research universities in the fields of cell biology and biochemistry, and the brilliant labs and facilities our researchers can access at the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) will help bolster our lead in these important disciplines,” he said.

“LIMS is one of the foundation stones in the development of the ambitious Northern Bioscience Precinct, a hub for advanced research in Melbourne’s growing northern region.”

Professor Dewar said the university’s work includes researching the cause of human, plant and animal diseases, and technologies to prevent disease.

Human health and food issues were enormous challenges facing mankind, according to Professor Brian McGaw, executive Dean of the faculty of science, technology and engineering.

“These challenges come at a time where we face new diseases, antibiotic resistance, climate change and a growing population,” he said.

“The LIMS complex, with its capacity for multi-disciplinary research, is crucial to our ability to meet future research challenges, as well as attracting the best students to study with us.”

The eye-catching, six-storey building includes 34 research and support laboratories.
