Salad days ahead for Whittlesea vegie garden competition hopeful

Con Karamalis wakes up every morning and looks at the sky, then to his precious garden full of edible bounty.

Melbourne’s fickle weather plays havoc with the 80-year-old’s plants, but he has a win in sight that could change that.

“I want to win the Whittlesea council’s vegie garden competition,” he says. Mr Karamalis came second last year and is aiming for first prize.

“Last year hail broke panels on the hot house and I need the prize money to fix it.” The competition has two categories: best front garden and best edible garden, with the first prize worth $500.
