NBN: Hear’s to Mill Park library’s high-tech ‘chair of silence’

Forget the cone of silence – Mill Park library has a high-tech “chair of silence”. The chair, or Silence Sound Centre, is the “smallest and most beautiful concert hall in the world”, according to Finnish manufacturer Studio Antti.

People such as Eshu Lin (pictured) can plug in a laptop, iPhone or other digital device and listen to music and watch videos without anyone outside the partially enclosed chair hearing.

It is part of the library’s digital hub – funded through a $382,000 federal government grant – which will officially open this month.

The library will be among the first sites in the City of Whittlesea to connect to the National Broadband Network. The digital hub is designed to help residents get computer training, try new technologies and connect to the super-fast internet, according to Yarra Plenty Regional Library spokeswoman Suzanne Male.

“The idea is to showcase the significant benefits the NBN has to offer homes and businesses and help locals improve their online and digital literacy skills.”
