Bundoora scientist finds fire-proof way

A BUNDOORA scientist who is developing materials to fire-proof infrastructure has been awarded an $18,000 Victoria Fellowship.

Dr Everson Kandare, RMIT vice chancellor’s research fellow, will travel overseas to work in fire research laboratories to test his fire-retardant materials.

He says he will also use his time in the UK, China and Canada to promote his research to strengthen “Australia’s reputation as a frontier research hub in advanced materials”.

Dr Kandare says although testing of the materials had been successful, further testing is needed to meet stringent fire safety standards laid down by the Bushfire Royal Commission after Black Saturday.
