Westmeadows found a way to win against Coburg Districts in the Essendon District Football League division 2 competition on Saturday.
After a big win against East Sunbury in round one, the Tigers found the going a bit tougher against the Lions on Saturday.
The Tigers jumped out of the blocks and led by 32 points at quarter time.
The margin was back to four points at half time, before it was back out to 18 points at the final break.
In the final quarter, the Lions threw everything at them.
There were few nervous moments for the Tigers late, but they were able to hold on, winning 8.5 (53)-5.18 (48).
Tigers coach Ash Flavel said they were relieved to get the win in the end.
“We got away with one late,” he said. “They had some bad kicking towards the end that let them down.
“We jumped them and they come back at us and closed the game up and made it difficult.
“We felt the game was in control for most of it. The last five or six minutes was pretty nerve-wracking and we held on as long as we could.”
Aaron Evans and Rex Hickman kicked two goals each for the Tigers.
Jordan Kosteas, Jarrod Peterson and Daniel Spencer were named the Tigers best.
Flavel said one of the most pleasing things for him was that they only played one and half quarters of good football and they still managed to get the win.
“As long as you get the four points, that it all that matters,” he said. “There’s good belief and going forward we need to look to put another two to three quarters together and we will be really hard to stop this year.”
Flavel said that sides have started to get an idea of their game plan as the season goes on and will look to shut their run and carry down.
The Tigers now face Glenroy on Anzac Day.
Flavel said they wanted to go into this match 2-0 and that the playing group was up and about following the two wins.
He said this match they would go in with a bit of an idea who they were playing, unlike the majority of the competition.
In division 1 results, Roxburgh Park lost to St Albans, while Tullamarine, which had a bye in round one, lost to Oak Park.
In premier division, Greenvale got its first win of the season, beating Deer Park.
