Thomastown has broke a nearly two year drought in the two-day format in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association Mash Shield.
Thomastown has struggled in the longer format the past couple of seasons, but was able to turn it around against South Morang on Saturday.
President and first XI player Jordan Cugnetto said it was a massive result for the side.
“We had a big focus towards ticking off a two day game win, now that we have done that, we will keep working towards winning a few more of them.” he said.
“It had been 780 days, nearly two years to the day since we’d had a win at two-day level.
“It was great for sure. They kind of left the door ajar for us.
South Morang made 9-190 on day one and decided to declare with 14 overs left in the day.
Thomastown lost one wicket before stumps but was confident of chasing the runs down.
Cugnetto, who was one of the unbeaten batsmen overnight, said they knew they just had to be patient.
“We had 14 overs last week and 80 overs this week,” he said.
“That’s 94 overs to get 190. We had time up our sleeves.
“Our patience got us there.”
Thomastown finished 5-191 in the 76th over.
Shoaib Khan was the star for Thomastown, finishing 107 not out.
Cugnetto, who was in the middle for a long time with Khan, said it was the best innings he’d seen for the club in the first XI.
“It was fantastic to watch from the other end,” he said. “He is a gun and he hits it so well and is calm under pressure.
“He’s new to the club.”
Cugnetto said they were lucky to have Khan fall into their laps, with a mate getting him to come down to the club.
“The rest is history.”
The win was Thomastown’s second of the season.
Cugnetto said it had been an interrupted one with all the rain.
He said they were starting to see improvement within the group.
“As long as we’re competitive,” he said.
“We’ve been in all bar one game. We’ve had a couple of quiet years.
“We’ve looking to build on what we’re doing in the years to come.”
Cugnetto said with new coach Nick Nteris on board this season they have been focusing on simplifying the game plan across the whole club.
“Get the basics right and results will eventually take care of themselves.”
Thomastown faces Keon Park in its next match. Keon Park won the round one match up between the sides.
Cugnetto said the club was always looking for players and were keen to get their women’s and junior programs back up and going.
