Mill Park has got its man, appointing Kevin Theuma as coach of its FV state league 2 north-west side for next season.
Having previously tried to get Theuma to the club, Mill Park announced last week that Theuma was their new senior coach.
He replaces John Kyrgios
Theuma said he was excited to join Mill Park.
“It’s a really good club and there’s a lot of hard working people doing good things,” he said.
“I know a few people and I’ve heard good things… It’s an exciting time for the club.”
Theuma comes to Mill Park, with an extensive playing and coaching background.
His playing career included time at George Cross, Albion Rovers, Avondale and Bundoora.
Since then he has coached at clubs including Bundoora, Sporting Whittlesea [which is now merged with Mill Park] and Albion.
He has spent the last three years at Albion, which plays in the same division as Mill Park.
Theuma said there was no hard feelings on his departure from the Rovers.
“They wanted the senior role to step up into a technical director role and I didn’t have time for that with work.
“It’s time for a change and it’s close to home, so it’s handy for me.”
Theuma has some idea what to expect with Mill Park, having coached against them this year.
He said they were hoping to build on the culture and try and find some consistency on field.
Mill Park finished the season eighth, with five wins for the year.
He said there was a lot of potential in the club to have some success.
“I think we can change that,” he said of the inconsistency.
“Hopefully we can bring in some new players.
“They’re a young club with a good junior base. Hopefully the current playing group is prepared to stay.
“I will also aim at giving younger talent an opportunity to shine as we look to bring success back to Mill Park.
Theuma didn’t have long to rest after his appointment, with trials being held this week.
He said he would talk to the existing playing group in the next couple of weeks.
“There’s no rest in the off season and it’s exciting to work with and turn the fortunes around.”
