SPORTS BRIEFS

Here’s a quick look at some of the other sports news in the Hume, Whittlesea, Sunbury and Macedon Ranges.

Premier Cricket

Greenvale Kangaroos’ batsmen were under massive pressure against Fitzroy Doncaster in Premier Cricket on Saturday as they tried to avoid outright defeat. Resuming at 0-3, chasing Fitzroy Doncaster’s 253, the ‘Roos were bowled out for 118. Skipper Kyle Adams, batting at nine, was the best of the batsmen, scoring 38. Sent straight back into bat, the Kangaroos were 6-137 at stumps. Joshua Trembearth made his first half century in the first 11, finishing 52 not out. The Kangaroos remain without a win after six rounds.

NMCA

Rivergum won a rematch of last year’s grand final against North Brunswick/Rosebank on the last ball of the game in the North Metro Cricket Association’s Jika Shield. Chasing 118, Rivergum struggled throughout its innings, finishing 9-120 to remain undefeated this season. Lalor Warriors defeated Darebin Chargers, ahead of Rivergum on net run rate. Keon Park and Olympic Colts were the other winners.

NFL

South Morang has secured key forward Kane Maghamez for the next Northern Football League season. The three-time division four best and fairest forward comes from Eastern Football League, and before that VFL club Williamstown.

VTCA

Greenvale Kangaroos were the big winners in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s senior division on Saturday despite not taking to the field. Rain resulted in VTCA officials calling off all matches on Friday. The Kangaroos had already secured a first innings win on day one of their match against Hampton. All other matches, including Tullamarine and Bonbeach Tangy, in the senior division finished in draws. Jacana and Craigieburn’s match and Westmeadows and Taylors Lakes match in north A1 finished in draws.

VSDCA

Roxburgh Park and Plenty Valley will now play one-day matches on Saturday in Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association after rain prevented play on day one of the clashes. VSDCA officials called off the weekend’s play on Friday. The Falcons play Noble Park and the Bats face Croydon.

GOLF

Golfers made the most of the conditions early last week before heavy rain resulted in tough conditions at the Romsey Golf Club on the weekend. Three of the four John Laing Shield quarter finals were held on the Melbourne Cup holiday, while the fourth was completed on Saturday, Anthony Freeman, Ron Walker, Les Gaunt and Jim Patton won through to the semi finals. On Saturday, Hugh Drummond won the club’s Stableford competition on a very wet green. On Wednesday, Kath Jekabsons and Michael McCarten won the club’s Burke and Wills competition, which sees the course completely redesigned for the day.

NETBALL

Rupertswood is holding its senior netball tryouts on Sunday at Lakeside Stadium. The club is looking for players for its A-grade, B-grade, C-grade and under-19 sides. Anyone interested register their interest by November 11. Details: http://ow.ly/UosVk
