South Morang’s fairy tale season in the Victorian Women’s Football League continues with the Lions through to the division 4 grand final.
After a winless first season, the first aim was for the Lions this year was to win a game.
It soon became to make finals and then a grand final.
That aim was achieved on the back of a dominant first half against Chirnside Park.
The Lions led at 44-1 at half time.
The Lions run was halted slightly in the second half, but they still won 8.6 (54) – 2.1 (13).
Lions coach Maurice Baldasso was stoked at the result.
“It was unbelievable to get that result and the way they played was amazing.
“I didn’t realise they would come out the way they did.
“The second efforts, the tackling and our one percenters were brilliant.”
After the dominant first half, Baldasso said the girls slacked off a bit in the third quarter.
“They were starting to lose a little bit of run in their legs, but turned it back on in the last as they knew a grand final was on the line.”
He said the players were thrilled to have made it this far.
“I don’t think anybody realised at the start of the season that we would make a grand final.
“We were happy to win a few games.”
The Lions will face either Chirnside Park or Brunswick Renegades in the grand final in two weeks time.
“We are confident whichever side we play.”
