Season over for Magpies

Roxburgh Park’s season is over in the Essendon District Football League division 2 women’s competition.

The Magpies were hoping to make it through to the preliminary final for a second straight year, but just fell short in the elimination final.

The Magpies faced the Sunbury Kangaroos for a second straight season in the elimination final but there was no repeat of last time.

The two teams traded the lead throughout the match with the Magpies leading by four points heading into the final quarter.

The Kangaroos kicked the only two goals of the final quarter to get the win, 5.7 (37)-4.4 (28).

It was the first time the Kangaroos had beaten the Magpies in seven attempts in the past two seasons.

“They finally got us,” he said. “The girls kept playing and I’m so proud of them.

“A lot of things happened to us and it was one of those years.

“The resilience of the girls has been amazing and I told the girls that on Saturday.

“We’re disappointed not to get any further, but I’m still so proud.”

The Magpies suffered a few early season blows as they lost players to pregnancy and injury.

They continued to fight and beat every team but Gisborne-Kyneton United during the regular season.

Allan said they were confident heading into the final with the Kangaroos.

He said the Kangaroos stars stood up late in the game when it was needed and they were the difference in the end.

Jameson Best kicked two goals for the Magpies.

Jordan Di Mizio, Sienna Linehan and Danira Fuamatu were named the Magpies best.

Allan said there was thinking of what might have been had they got past the Kangaroos.

“Across the competition it was quite interesting and we were so close to the other two [Taylors Lakes and Sunbury Kangaroos].

“We never played Gisborne-Kyneton United at full strength. Even if we got that far I don’t think we would have been able to.”
