It’s season over for the Hume City Broncos men’s side, while the women’s side is on the hunt for a new Big V coach.

The Broncos hopes of going one step further in the championship men’s competition ended in the first week of finals.

The Broncos hosted the Shepparton Gators on Sunday in an elimination final.

After a slow start, the Broncos worked their way back into the game in the middle two quarters to lead by two points heading into the final quarter.

The Gators finished the stronger of the teams and got the margin out to eight points at stages in the final quarter.

It would be heartbreak for the Broncos, which lost 99-95.

Scott Stone top scored with 24 points while Malik McKinney scored 24.

While the Broncos season is over, two players are up for league awards.

McKinney is up for all star five and most valuable player, while Zach McKenzie is up for youth player.

Coach Matt Foster is a finalist for coach of the year.

Meanwhile, Carey ‘Paps’ Papanicolaou has finished his tenure at the Broncos as women’s coach.

“Paps stepped into the role of our champ women’s head coach and through his resilience led a team crippled with injury and illness through the 2024 Big V season,” the Broncos said.

“We thank Paps for his contribution to the Broncos and hope to see him back in a coaching role sometime in the future.

“After coaching over 500 Big V games Paps is now off to enjoy some well deserved time off.”
