Calder Cannons’ Sarah Dargan was left stunned when her name was read out by Collingwood at the AFLW draft on Wednesday.

Hopeful of being selected to join an AFL, Dargan thought she was a long shot and was expecting disappointment.

“I played nationals, but I wasn’t selected for the combine or the All Australian team, so I thought it was doubtful.

“Collingwood came to my house but didn’t give it anything away. They said they were interested and that boosted my confidence, but it was a while before the draft so I did have some doubts.”

Watching the draft with her family, Dargan said it was pretty emotional when the Magpies picked her at pick 20.

“It’s really emotional and overwhelming,” she said.

“Mum was more nervous than me. I was crying and mum was pretty emotional, everyone was jumping up and down.

“I don’t think it has hit me yet.”

Dargan heads to the Magpies having played with Pascoe Vale after returning to the sport when she was 15.

“I played when I was younger with the boys in under-12s,” she said.

“Then I started playing basketball. Through school football I got interested again and started playing.

“I always watched the boys playing football.

“I was happy to play under-18s this year, I played a couple of games in the seniors. “

The 18-year-old who represented Vic Metro for the last three years says she’s unsure what to expect at Collingwood, but is looking forward to it.

“It’s scary and exciting at the same time. I know a few people who are going there.”
