Roxburgh Park is putting a big focus on building relationships between its female sides as it prepares for the upcoming Essendon District Football League Women’s season.
Under new coach Troy Geary, the Magpies have been working hard with the youth girls side to ensure a good pathway between the two teams.
Geary said he was excited by how it had been going.
“We’ve put in a lot of work, building the partnership between the juniors and seniors, and I think we have accomplished that,” he said.
“We’re going to be setting high goals this season.”
Geary said there had been positive signs during the pre-season.
The Magpies finished 12th last season with a single win.
“We’ve played practice matches against North Brunswick and Strathmore, both the under-18s and seniors,” he said.
“We got what we wanted from those games. We were focused on set ups and structures.”
This season will be a bit of an unknown for the Magpies, with many of their opposition fielding teams for the first time.
With a growth in teams, the competition has been split into two divisions. The bottom three teams from last season, including the Magpies, will be in division 1 along with all the new teams and Aberfeldie’s second team.
“We’re trying to find out as much as we can about the other teams,” Geary said. “We’re trying to prepare the best we can – I think we are in good shape.”
The Magpies have a new-look leadership group, with Sarah Mazzucco appointed captain.
Mazzucco has come through the ranks at the Magpies, having played with their youth side.
Geary said the players had selected the leadership group and he couldn’t have been happier.
The Magpies will start their season on Sunday against Coburg Districts.
Geary said the club was still seeking players for both the women’s and youth girls side.
“We have about the 20 mark for the senior team and roughly the same for the under-18s,” he said. “We can always use more players.
“We’re looking forward to a good year and feel like we’re building a strong group.
“Anyone looking for a club to play with is welcome to come down.”
