Roxburgh Park holds its ground in division 2

Roxburgh Park continues to rack up the wins in the middle of the Essendon District Football League division 2 table.

The Magpies have struggled with injuries but have won enough matches to be third on the ladder and are only a game behind second.

On Saturday, they faced Coburg Districts, one of the sides jostling with them on the ladder.

Seven points separated the two teams at half-time, before the Magpies kicked away in the second half to win
12.24 (96) – 7.9 (51).

Coach Paul Derrick said it was a tight contest in the first half.

“Our kicking in the first half let us down a bit,” he said. “After half-time everything went our way … hopefully we are getting on track.”

Jayden Walker kicked two goals in a best-on-ground performance while Bradley Dimech and Reece Tarczon were among the best.

Derrick said that given the number of injuries the side had suffered early in the season, he was happy with where the Magpies were sitting.

“We are getting better and we are starting to get guys back,” he said. “We were still missing five guys from the senior side. We’ve been able to play some young players, like Luke Capuano.”

In the next two weeks, the Magpies will play Moonee Valley and Jacana – second and fifth on the ladder.

“If we want to play finals, we have to beat these sides,” Derrick said. “They both beat us when we played them earlier in the season.”

Jacana is full of confidence after a result the likes of which has not been seen at the club in many years.

After kicking 11 goals in the first quarter against Burnside Heights, the Jaguars won 36.16 (232) – 4.4 (28).

The Jaguars’ win was small in comparison with that of Greenvale in premier division – it won 48.17 (305) – 1.6 (12) over Northern Saints.
